Candeling and hatching diary.

11 babies now pics after work today 4 pips and 7 still sitting there.

Well candling really won't hurt them. You just don't want to keep them out of the bator to long, once they get cold it takes a while for them to rewarm up.

How long did you let them rest? I only allow mine to rest for 8 hours then I candle for loose air cells or detached able because you have to treat them a little different before turning them..

Nice..live and learn...

As far as the candling, I'm not sure if I had them out too long or not. I might have at one point or another. About a minute at a time maybe? I did it a LOT though. Too much I think. Like, every day from about day 3 to day 12 or so when I finally felt like it was out of my system.

I'm going to have to read about air cells in shipment. I turned these shipped eggs like I turned normal eggs without air cell damage. I had a lot of die off in the beginning, could that have caused it?

I also think my humidity may have been too much at the end because the ones that developed nicely all the way through passed away after lockdown. I literally shut the lid on the incubator and the humidity went from being in the 50's to almost 70%, temps were fine though. Next time I won't touch a thing and simply not turn them. I don't know why I took "lockdown" so literally.

I hope over excited and too impatient newbies come along and read this. Learn from my mistakes! Pay attention to what the pros tell ya!

10 babies now three more pipped and 11 more to go they did not look as far along last time I candled. still have another 40 in the other bator on lockdown I love my redwood

Did the one make it? You said you your worried about ones beak not making it to the top?? Lol

So I went out to check everyone this morning to find out that I have 6 chicks!!! I thought I had 5! The 3 eggs are still there too so I know it's not a new chick. There must've been one stuck under mamas wing:)

Candling everyday is ok, like I said as long as it wasn't for a long time, that's not going to affect them, however if you were candling like three four times in one day, well yeh that will cause problems..lol

You must check the air cells, especially with shipped eggs, I have some information on my website that may help you. Www.lwbarnhouse.com click on the duck tab, there's two methods, talks about how to hatch both methods work for chickens as well as ducks, with the exception you don't sponge a chicken egg as in method one..

70 may have done it, it's kind of pushing it..

You got that right, you learn from your mistakes and try and not repeat them. Next batch will be better..

Well... there was sort of a silver lining to all of this. I did get to bring some some silkie chicks since my first batch of eggs was almost a total failure.

When you say you shut the lid at lockdown - did you close your vents too?
