Candled today...

Athough not a goose egg this shows a Greenwing Macaw egg that has both internally and externally pipped. The air cell appears to rapidly increase in size as the chick prepares to internally pip. However, this rapid increase in air cell size is also due to the chick changing position of its head as it manouvres into hatching position. Notice the large air cell size - this egg hatched and was raised sucessfully. Its the chick in our avatar

Candling can guide incubation right up to hatching

jack & mommy's duckies :

I've set almost 20 eggs from my africans.....just a few each day... I've had 7 that nothing happened with (but they were early, and their first eggs) now I have 7 more doing wonderfully...and the last few I don't know yet since it is too early to candle.

But the part that sucks is I forgot to write down the days i set them.....and i don't remember the hatch days.... duhhhh

but that will be ok...I write the days i collect them on and i set them the next day.... so i'll be close really close

That rocks! I hope you hatch out a nice bit of them.
Any interest in swapping eggs to get new blood in each others' flocks?

Thats awesome.. have you ever shown yours, or are yours from show bloodlines? I think the dewlap toulouse that are relatively close to the standard are amazing looking.. so regal, lol!

That is awesome Shelley! I love the Embdens.. just never had any.
I know, geese take waaay too long to hatch... but the babies are far more rewarding than any other type of bird I have worked with before...

Ah, great picture...

It is my dream to breed Greenwing Macaws; they are favourite birds. Must be incredible to see the young hatching and growing. My first love in the bird world was macaws and I'm aiming to get there one day. I have a pair of nanday conures on two eggs right now, going very well. Anyway, off topic, but... Aircells do necessarily become very large during the internal pip, and sometimes people underestimate just how large they can or even should be.

I have a staggered hatch with mine because everyone said you have to set them in the first couple of days. Now I've heard that isn't true so I've saved some longer and set more at one time. When I set them I just have a pencil and write the date on them. I have to figure out when to stop turning but at least I have some hope of doing it. I think it's a lot easier to have a bunch hatch at once and be done with it. Hatching is a lot of stress for me.

Yeah, staggered hatches suck. I *try* to only set a few hatches at a time, but usually I get six built up, set them, then six more, set them, etc etc.. It is a pain brooding all those different ages!
