I have been incubating chicken hatching eggs I received in the mail and my hopes are pretty low that any of these eggs are viable or will hatch. I’ve tossed 1 that was clearly unfertilized and 1 that was rotten, but the rest I don’t see what I would expect to see 3 days before hatch date.. there are dark patches in the eggs but I can’t make out an embryo or see movement etc, and the dark area doesn’t seem to take up enough space. They are brown eggs (barred rocks, Orpington, australorp) but there are a few polish too which should be easiest to see due to the white shell. Well this is what one looked like when candled but this embryo has to be dead. It’s way too small right??? Since it doesn’t smell I left it in but I’m heartbroken for my 5 year old that none of these eggs will probably hatch. :-(

Edit to add I’ve never incubated before but am doing my best to compare what I’m seeing to online articles, pictures, videos, etc.

Here’s one polish egg candled.

I'm sorry, that egg died a long time ago.

Here is a candling chart that shows what you should be seeing. By day 18 the eggs should be almost entirely full. You should be able to see lots of movement and maybe some veining.

Unfortunately, the black dot and lack of veins means it died.
Thank you that was definitely what I was thinking. I was nervous maybe that was just the eyeball and maybe I couldn’t see the rest. But was pretty sure it was a goner. The rest of my eggs are brown and I can’t see anything definitive but I’m guessing they’re not viable either because I should see something by now if they were in fact viable. There’s dark areas but I can’t make out an embryo or movement or veining. Just a dark mass.
