Candling eggs---half the eggs candle one color, what does it mean?

I ordered 12 eggs and I decided to candle them last night before putting them in the incubator and I noticed half have a yellowish glow to them, and you can see through them decent, and the other half have a red glow to them and are a bit darker.

What does it mean?

All came from Silkies.

Does this mean that half are bad or half aren't fertile?

You haven't started to incubate them yet? Usually when they start to turn dark they are growing. Clears are eggs that just may only have a yellow yolk visible but otherwise very little color and no veins or shapes in them. These are bad eggs if you've started incubating and about how all the eggs should look before they start incubating. It means they've done nothing yet. If you haven't started incubating I would worry about the dark eggs. Have they been out in warm temps?

I'd stick them all in and candle after at least 4 days and definitely at 7 days before deciding which ones are bad.

I candled them yesterday after they all arrived--they were mailed.

I marked the dark ones with an X and the light ones with an O so we'll see how it goes in a couple of days--I went ahead and put them all in the incubator!

That's only true if they've been incubating. An egg that develops before you incubate it and then sits around at room temp has a good chance of dying. In that case veins is bad and dark especially with a red ring is close to a guranteed bad egg in a few days. Eggs should look about like candling a store bought egg before you start incubating them. I would guess these got heated up in the mail and started to grow. I'd get them in the incubator asap and hope they are still alive.

No veins in any of them yet. I knew to look for those as I already have some eggs in the incubator that I candle all the time to learn the progressioN!

This is my first time having them shipped.

At first I didn't even notice until I was going through half the eggs and suddenly couldn't see as easily through an egg and realized there was a difference!

I'll give it a couple of days and see!

I'm also having trouble candling. My first batch in my first incubator. !2 mail order ameraucanas. 4 were broken on arrival. I don't know what I'm doing wrong, but I can't see much more than a yolk floating around. Sometimes I can't even see anything through the shell. I put some of my own fertilized sumatra eggs in and I can't see much in them either. What's the trick to actually see something??

Here's my experience. I had one batch that had the "darker" reddish color in most of the eggs and they were scrambled, the yolks ruptured which gave the egg the allover color, the ones that were yellowish were fine. Let us know how they look on day 7-10. I don't throw any away until at least day 10 just to be sure. Good luck

Unless it smells or is weeping, keep it in the incubator until at least 7-10 days. If it is still clear then with no visible veins, then pull them.
