I have maran mix eggs under my broody hen on day 12 and I can't see a thing when candling. The same broody had an egg explode on her last year. Do you think where she's more experienced now she may know if it's spoiled and remove it?

*dark eggs not in photo but I posted her because she's a cutie patootie.

Sometimes hens do know when an egg is bad and I'm not sure how. They pluck their underside to provide better heat to the eggs, but maybe that allows them to sense the eggs better too.

Regardless though, generally, an egg doesn't explode so fast so was it like days after it was due to hatch? Unless somehow it got bacteria into it or if it cooked nearly the entire 21 days. In the incubators, we candle at 7 days usually so can pull out those non-fertile or non-starters right off the bat.

Maybe could you candle hers about halfway through and see if there's any you could ditch? Otherwise, let's hope she's a better judge this round. She's adorable!

Thank you for the response! The egg that exploded last time was about half way through incubating. She was a first time momma so I was trying not to disturb her. She is much more friendly now so I can candle the eggs. The only issue is I can't see a thing!

I have Marans eggs in an incubator, and I can't see through them very well either. It's good to know the sniff test worked!
Yeah it looks like it failed only a few days ago. So glad I caught it early! I was definitely so scared I was gonna crack the egg and it was gonna be alive. *TMI* But it was very obvious once the brown liquid and smell (even through a zip lock bag) came out that it was gone.
