Candling Quail Eggs-Day 10

That's correct. After 6-7 days, fertile, developing embryos will cause the egg to appear about 2/3 to 3/4 dark, mostly at the large end (assuming you are incubating them large end up, which is what you should be doing), with a small air sac above the darkness (which you may not be able to see) and about 1/4 to 1/3 greenish glow at the bottom. When the whole egg has a greenish glow throughout (with a really bright light, you might see the ever so slightly darker shade of the yolk floating around, but it won't completely block the light), the egg is infertile. That's about all you need to see. It's cool to see the blood vessels, but if you see the dark blob, so far so good. At lockdown, the developing egg should appear totally dark, except for a small egg sac at the top, if you can see it at all.

This is really helpful on Day 18. I was getting worried with not much happening and started candling. I saw many that had the airsack and then the greenish glow. So I guess we just sit and wait.... Movement today so keeping fingers crossed.

This really helps! Thank you for the great description.

I have had some less than favourable swings in temp in my incubator in the past few days. I am wondering if there is any way to tell by candling if the embroys have been damaged by heat, other than waiting it out. I can definitely tell that some are infertile (the light shines completely through by day 9). Some have dark veins for sure, with an air sac. But is there any way to tell if they have stopped developing once they got to the point of showing veins?

This is my first hatch and feeling nervous! We are ordering an actual incubator, but right now it is a DIY.
