Candling, what is the purpose?

Hi, I am on my first hatch and am wondering what the purpose of candling is. Just to see if there is a baby chick:? or is it more important then that:?

The purpose of candling is to identify infertile eggs or eggs that started to develop and then died/stopped so that they do not go bad, explode or ooze, and potentially ruin the hatch.
