Canine Sebaceous Cyst

I treated one on my older dog with oral antibiotics and a topical spray called gentacalm. Took a few months to totally heal up.

Need to look for that (gentacalm). Mia sure loves getting her daily treatments ... Show her the Qtips & WH, she comes running. The flaking alot less. Why don't the Vet's tell us about these "remedies"?

Update - Mia had her 3rd bath; 1st was Aug 3rd, 2nd Aug 8th; today, I saw her roll on something in the yard She still has an odor but not obnoxious like prior to starting the Dawn baths. I wouldn't have bathe her had she not rolled in whatever and notice she was scratching last night & this morning. Not blow drying her anymore, it's been so warm I towel dry and we stay out until she's semi dry. Still doing the Witch Hazel treatment 2x day which she loves, and a brushing with her "people" Goody Bristle brush.

There is definite improvement She's not itching/scratching constant, don't see flakes on her fur, still see drying skin/flakes when I'm searching for lumps but not alot. I brush her on the table in the patio using the dustpan to "check" ... There definitely less flakes

I had ordered the Tar & Coal shampoo prior to your post, I just maybe sending it back
My Sister has a big dog with same problem, she started the Witch Hazel/QTip treatment, it's been a week and she's say it's helping. Malie's not itching, she hasn't bathed her with the Dawn "yet". But think you're on to something here Thank you so much

Mia was miserable scratching/smelling so decided as much as the WH/Dawn was helping, I wanted to try the Coal Tar Shampoo (Amazon) which specified seborrhea. I recall my mom using on her poodles which helped but never cured their dermatitis issue. Notice while massaging it in, felt new lumps in areas she was itching which I couldn't see. The shampoo says it can be used 2 - 3x week, towel dried her, it does leave a smell which isn't so bad & her fur isn't as "coarse" feeling, feels softer. Will try it, see how much relief it gives her, still thinking it's the weather, heat & humidity has been horrible.

Seborrehea is different than sebaceous cyst. It usually requires veterinary care. The one dog I had with it needed steroid injections on a regular basis. The shampoos never really worked for me. I also saw it a lot, years ago in poorly bred cocker spaniels when I used to groom. It's a horrible thing for both dog and owner.

Have you thought about asking the vet to run a blood test for a bacteria infection?

I had a dog that had a bacteria infection in his blood and he itched like a mad man.
It took a couple rounds of different antibiotics but they worked.
No more sour smell and the scratching completely stopped.



We had tried ever shampoo, lotion, spray, change food before the blood test. Looking back I wished I would have done the blood test first.

@Texas Kiki ... My Vet is the one that said "can't do anything" but that's a great idea about a blood test, will call & see about getting one done. Really need a new Vet, just haven't found a "competent" one ... Wish my "old" vet hadn't retired, he was good.

@oldhenlikesdogs ... Did your dog suffer from Sebaceous Cyst or Seborrhea? My mom had poodles that suffered miserably from some dermatitis infection, poor things. We dealt with the smell for years, they were put on prednisone which helped but soon as the were off it came back. Think that's where I recall the Coal & Tar Shampoo but thought of trying. What I like it can be used 2 - 3x week, does remove alot of the flaking. Waiting to see how long & well it helps.

@mixedUPturk - Did you continue finding new cyst develop? I notice when she starts scratching/itching, it's a new one popping up in that area.

Thank you all for your advice, it's getting the Vet to DO something about it. There's 3 in that practice, they say the cyst is part of aging. I know the Witch Hazel helps dry the cyst, so far the shampoo removed all the flaking whereas the Dawn didn't and it had lessen the flaking. The new cyst is what causing her to itch, the continued use of the WH dries the cyst which then flakes. If i get the cyst when it's small (hard to find under her dense coat) it disappears. She's got 2 that have yet to disappear but not causing her discomfort ... When I apply the WH, if it's new & itchy she squirms but the 2 older ones must be "dead" I hope.

My oldest current dog had a sebaceous cyst last year that I successfully treated and it healed up. Those are caused by an infected oil gland I believe.

I used to have a basset hound that had seborreah. That was a lifelong problem, that I had to treat on a regular basis and it never quite went away. I believe seborreah is a hereditary condition, that is like an autoimmune problem. I was also told there wasn't much they could do except steroid shots, and the medicated baths, as well as antibiotics for the skin infections that would occur because of it.
