Argh, is this normal (graphic pix--warning)

http://ziamunshi.com/2010/02/henzilla-the-killa/

I am editing this because I wasn't very clear. She did NOT eat the chick. She still has the remaining eggs under her and is guarding them with her life. But she did peck it open and it was gross.

Well, it happens.

Whoever posted it and planned to put chicks under her, bad idea in my opinion. Because she may well do it again.

I do not think it usually happens.

A lot can go wrong with a broody, but not as much as when we do it for them!

(Well, at least when I do it for them. Some of you guys get those 100% hatches.)

I have to say, I have never killed and eaten one when it hatched.

I don't think it's normal. I also don't think it's too surprising.

I do think it's a little disturbing.

I probably shouldn't have posted under that title. She didn't actually EAT the developing chick. But she did peck the shell open quite a lot. The other eggs are still under her.

"If nothing hatches and she stays broody, I will buy some chicks and sneak them under her in the dead of night. Apparently, this approach sometimes tricks them into thinking they’ve hatched their eggs.

Of course, she’ll probably kill those too."

WTF????

Sometimes, an incubator is the way forward. WHY would you put eggs / chicks under this hen, thinking "Of course, she’ll probably kill those too.".

Please.

I liked the title. The pix had a EWWW! factor to it.

Imp- pretty sure I won't be eating eggs tonight.

WARNING: THIS COMMENT MAY BE GROSS, BUT TRUE!

I had a broody Serama, who hatched out 5 babies all by herself. All was well for a few days. Then I noticed a small wound on top of the baby chicks head. I took it out, put antibiotics on it, and put it back... the next day... all that was left... well.... wasnt normal.

She wont ever get her own babies again...

Oh please yourself. Save me the sanctimoniousness. It was EXAGGERATION. It was HUMOR.

And even if you were somehow incapable of recognizing the tone of the whole post, or of reading that the rest of the eggs are still under her, then let me go ahead and say that comments like "what???" and sarcastic little "pleases" with angry little emoticons probably isn't the way to win friends and influence people.

I know! I should probably edit the first post with a warning disclaimer.

I tell you, I really hated having to pick that egg up when I threw it away. One little leg was dangling out of the shell and it was about two and a half weeks developed.

OMG!!

So what do you think? Was it on all the heads? Do you think this is a survival of the fittest thing when they know something is wrong with the chick(s)?
