Cannibalism targeting broilers

He never did post the physical dimensions of his chicken coop but admitted it was a lack of space issue. I have a feeling it was 125 birds in 100 square feet.

Yes I feel like it was space was the main issue. I also think it had something to do with the broilers themselves, none of the others were getting packed on. We butchered all the broilers up last weekend and I haven't seen a problem since.
 
Yeah, you really aren't supposed to mix broilers with regular birds, because the broilers just want to hang out and eat, so they're easy targets.
On the other hand, in a ranging scenario with managed feed, layer chicks can prompt broiler chicks to move more.
 
Any chicken that sees a red color on another chicken will start pecking at it. As they draw more blood, it becomes a bigger target for more chickens. Now that they've acquired the taste of blood and flesh, they turn into cannibals.

Not red, per se, but blood....otherwise no chicken would have any combs left.
