How do I doctor this? My leg horns did this. I am getting rid of them tomorrow. She is resting by herself quietly in my bathroom. I feel so bad for her! I usually put Neosporin on these so it can heal and the other girls will leave them alone but this is a gaping hole! Is there a spray antibiotic to help fight infection? What do you recommend? TIA

Oh dear. Poor girl. Can you clean it? I can't tell what part of her body we are looking at. I have heard some amazing recovery stories of chickens, but I'm not sure exactly what you should do here. I have Vetericin Plus on hand for this sort of thing, but have not had to use it. Do you have betadine/iodine? I am certain someone will have some good advice here. She may end up needing antibiotics to make sure it is not infected.

There is a good spray that you can use, i think it colors the area so it is less tempting to peck also kills germs. Veterycin or something like that. Iodine is good for cleaning wounds. What do you have on hand? I would give an electrolyte solution in her drinking water. Give her Mashed boiled eggs for protein to help healing. If you have triple antiboitic ointment you can apply that with a qtip.

Blu kote is the spray. Covers the red.
Try to clean the wound gently, I keep betadine on hand for emergencies.
Then pat dry.
Vetericyn spray is good or
Triple antibiotic if you can get it to stick.
Gentle nonstick type bandage if possible?
Provide electrolytes, good high protein foods like scrambled eggs, yogurt, canned tuna and either baby or poultry vitamins ASAP.

Supportive care and warm quiet isolation are a must here.

Hope your sweetly heals quickly.

Yes. Totally agree with supportive care and warm, quiet isolation, along with electolytes and high protein foods to support growing tissue during healing. However, no need for Blu Kote until she is back with the flock, right? I though Blu Kote was only for color to hide the blood red. Or does it have antiseptic properties?

Label says germicidal, fungicidal, antiseptic.
But I've never had to use it.
You're right though. Why bother with all that mess if your going to be isolating anyway.

Also one more thought.
If you have saline , just plain saline like for contacts, it's good for rinsing wounds.

the Poor Dear ..Clean it up ...with gentle soap and water .
Dont use peroxide unless it gets infected ..
yes put some Regular Neosporin on it .
Blood is like a magnet to a chicken ...I always have bluecoat on hand .
It is a antiseptic spray which coats the wound with blue and helps it heal .
Chickens ignore blue ...all chickens will peck at red it doesnt matter the breed ...
Dont cover it ..leave it open it should heal and seal itself back up .
Chickens heal easily ...she should be okay longs she is separate

T-Rex dinosaurs are the ancestors of all our Chickens. So is it any wonder then that chickens like meat, especially bloody meat.

99% of all problems chicken keepers experience in one way or the other can be traced back to the chickens' keepers.

Go to the co-op or farm store and pickup a spray bottle of Jensen Violet, otherwise known as "purple medicine". Use this on her wound and keep her isolated until she heals.
