I recently bought two quail which turned out to be male, i cant find any female quail to stop them crowing so much. i have searched the internet for days now in search of some female quail locally, can anyone help? i live in bangor gwynedd, liverpool are the closest ones and its not really worth going to liverpool for a few hens, does anyone know of a breeder close to me say within 30 miles? any help would be appreciated as my roos are crowing ALOT

I know nothing about quail - never knew they crowed. If their crowing is a big problem, I would rehome them and start over when you can find females. You may want to check out the quail threads in the "Other Backyard Poultry forum," but I have no idea where you would find some in UK. Can you find a source of hatching eggs, if you get enough, some should be females.

yeah they crow like crazy, i have thought of rehoming them but i'm kind of attatched to them now, it's their little faces, they are so cute lol. I suppose ebay is a source of hatching eggs but that would be my last resort as i have no equipment for hatching them. Thanks for advice though

Hello there and welcome to BYC!

Yes, Cotrunix quail do a LOT of crowing. You will find that many members in our quail section cull the crowers as once they start, nothing stops them. If you do get them some females, each male will need 4 to 7 females as they are very sexual and can mate quail hens to death if there is not enough female to mate with. Keep these two groups of males with harems separate.

Good luck with your quail and welcome to our flock!

hey everyone thanks for being so welcoming. I may have found someone locally who may be able to help me with my quail situation, so fingers crossed this works out. He will rehome my two roos for definite, because he rehomes alot of unwanted male birds and will get me two female quail. I didnt want to rehome the roos because they are so cute but after another night of crowing i think i'm going to have to lol, atleast then i can get the female quail i wanted without any issues with the male birds crowing or harming the females. I only have a small garden and therefore i can only have a few birds, so it wouldnt be practical to keep the males because as you guys have said i need 4-7 females to 1 male and, as i have never kept any birds before i thought i'd just start with two and have a maximum of 4 maybe, but not for a while. I think I'm going to miss my roos, but then again i'm not going to get woken up at 3am to two roos having a crowing contest lol so i spose as long as i get my female quail it's all good.
