Can't find grit the right size

I use chick grit for my chicks. Its much smaller than the grit I by from my older bird, but not as small as sand. I would not think egg shell would work as grit since the purpose of grit is to grind the grains in the gizzard. I'm not sure if you have the soil for it, but is it possible for you to bring in a couple scoops of dirt from the yard and let them find their own grit?

why not a home made grit egg shells you can do the size to how ever you want
Chicks should not be fed egg shells or ground oyster shell. They are not grit which is ground granite. They are to increase calcium availability to egg layers and can harm chicks.

Egg and oyster shells are NOT grit. They are a calcium supplement for layers and harmful to growing birds. They will not act as grit.
