Can't find grower feed!

My 4 chooks are 7 weeks old and have finished their 50 lb bag of chick starter. I went to the same feed store, and they don't have any grower! What do I do??

Do they have a combination starter/grower for chickens? That is what I use since that is all my specific TSC carries. My only other suggestion is to look for a different feed store. I know that is not always convenient.

I don't like to feed the super powered high octane food to chicks. I like for them to develop internally and externally at the pace they are supposed to develop. Just seems like they will be healthier overall if they grow at the rate they are supposed to grow. Plus that is what I read at the extension websites. That's for the future laying flocks. Meaties are different.

i noticed that to. its may. i stopped at 3 feed stores and they didnt have it in yet. i found some at agway finnally .

When I went by the TSC this afternoon, I did not see the starter/grower or the grower. When I asked about it, they looked in the back and found some. They had run out up front and had not yet restocked. Did you ask if they had any in the back?

It might also help to ask when they get their shipments in. They seem to sell out pretty fast on some of the feeds, like layer pellets. You might want to be one of the first ones there after the delivery.

I found a Start-and-Grow bag from Purina. It happened to be the one I had been using for 7 weeks. On the back, it said for layers I should use this until they are 20 weeks old. It has 18% protein. Is this correct?

Yes, use the Start and Grow until they start laying.

I'm about to try this kind, from AzureStandard.com. They deliver across half the US. It's spendy but looks very good. Someone who wants to buy eggs from a corn & soy free flock gave me the link. I'm in an Azure buying group with her.

I order by the 18th of each month, & they deliver to a drop point nearby on the following Tuesday. You need to be part of a group with a total group order of $500 (they have tons of good stuff-like Diatomaceous Earth 50# for $17, & human food too, kind of like Organic Costco) a month. If you like their site I think they can hook you up with a local group.

Currently my 'tweens' are on a mix of starter mix, lay crumbles, & King feed show & grow (which isn't yet available here-I bought it at a show)

Hope you find something! ETA: Oh you're in Portland! So are they! Might not need to be in a group, maybe you can pick it up from them or from Magill Ranch in Wamic? (not sure where that is)

I could never find it here either. i feed mine Nutrena starter/grower until one of them lays, then I take everybody off... because the chick food is medicated and we love to eat eggs!

I have used Purina Gamebird Grower (28% protein) with excellent results.

This year, I was unable to find it in stock at the feed store and settled on what was in stock which was Nutrena Game Bird Pellets (25%) protein. That extra protein made a huge difference in the growth and development of my laying hens. They are all very healthy!

If your TSC doesn't carry it ask them to order it. It'll take a week or 2 to arrive. In the meantime, you can feed your pullets a mix of starter and scratch.
