Can't get a permit to build coop - building any ways

My husband got busted for building his shed without a permit. The fine ended up costing him twice as much as the permit would have. Someone told us later that the mailmen get $20 for every building under construction that they report that doesn't have a permit. Think about it; who else is in a better position to spot new construction?
Any mail carriers out there who will confirm or deny this?

I would absolutely NOT believe a tale such as that... letter carriers are people like everyone else. The majority of people don't rat on others, and cities can't afford to pay to have it done anyway. Government just doesn't work this way.
Yes, it's usually a neighbor who doesn't have enough to do to keep him/her busy. Sometimes inspectors drive through neighborhoods and can spot building going on at a property.
But, please, don't blame the mail carrier!

glad to hear you are grandfathered in.

permit shmermit. we don't get permits here, if we did then they would tax us on what we build or poke their noses in our business. The coop is 12x12. The kids playhouse is 12x12 and 16 feet high (A-frame design). niether one is on permanent concrete piers so it is technically mobile.

Sorry if this has already been suggested, (didn't read all 6 pages) why not get one of the cheap pre-fabbed plastic or aluminum garden sheds that you get at a home store or even walmart. make a few mods to it like cutting a hole here and there and go with that.

When we first built our home back about 6 years ago here, we wanted to get wild game species, well i couldnt get a permit from the Pa game comission until i had a letter from the township to prove it was allowed.

Well i got that letter and it says i can own and keep any animal i want on the 8 acre property here(including tigers or what have you).

Last year Just down 4 blocks away they just zoned it risd, all those folks now have to follow the rule, however there are 2 that grand fathered in down there, good for them folks..

For me getting it in writting and signed by them(township) if they ever try to pull a fast one on me , i got it all in writing....

I would sugg if anyone is building or just getting started in poultry and you feel they may zone you sooner or later, try to get anything in writting from your township or rule makers you can..makes it alot harder for them to force you out..

At least in this district, it's incorrect. And since they are not real free willing to give extras in general, I seriously doubt they do this anywhere. Goes right up with the silly rumor that mail people can run redlights, but cops can't.

You may not need a permit to build something that small. If it's moveable, i.e. put wheels on it, then it probably won't need a permit as it is not a fixed building.

One thing I have learned thur this site is every city/county has different rules on poultry and sheds. In Charlotte, the shed is easy and no rules really apply if the cost is under some number of thousands. Not hard to stay under that. We do need a poultry permit and we can apply on line. I send mine in but haven't heard a word from anyone in two months. We do have a $40 a year fee but no one asked for it yet I had to list the names and phone numbers for the property owners whose land joins mine. I then talked with all of them to make sure they were OK with 10 hens laying fresh eggs living near them. Wasn't to hard to sell the program.

Talking about building permit spy's, at my dads place in Wisconsin he is good friends with a police detective who told him to always hide anything you replace in the house i.e. old water heater because the patrol officers are to take note of any item in your garbage and turn your address into the inspectors office to make sure a permit was pulled.
