I can't get my brooder temp over 84. I'm using a 75 watt heat lamp (it promised to heat up to 95 at a distance of 18", but it's not).

I have three thermometers in the brooder that all read between 78 and 84. My chicks are expected at the feed store tomorrow!

I guess I'll run out and buy a larger heat bulb, better safe than sorry!

can you lower it a little. i use a 100 watt light bulb in a 40 gallon rubber maid water tub. after a week i raise it up a little.

Do you have a local Lowes hardware?.The one here carrie's actual "brooder" light bulb's they are frosted color. They run around $4.Always had good luck with them.We have a new TSC here and I picked up a 2 pack of their heat/brooder bulb's for around $5.They seem to be doin fair as well on my 2 brooder's of duckling's so far.

I returned my 75 watt red bulb to the store because it wasnt getting over 80 something either. I bought the 250 watt from TSC and it was 110!
So DH took the advice of someone on here and rigged up a rope to the light so it could be raised and lowered until it was the right temp.
We had it on for a few hours and it was finally right.
Now.... all I need is for my chicks to arrive!

I get my brooder lights from Lowes as well. They come in 125 or 250 watt sizes and I prefer the frosted ones (those are white).

Just be sure to hang them in such a way that they cannot fall into the brooder bedding.

.....Alan.
