Can't Machine Quilt...Why Does Machine Skip?

Your doing great!

Thank you! Means a lot coming from an artist like yourself. I pulled a small quilt top out of our Etsy shop that I was trying to sell just as a pieced top. Going to take the plunge and FMQ it myself, first actual quilt I've done with the FM rather than just straight lines with the walking foot. Maybe it will sell as a finished piece rather than just a top. I stopped by a local quilt shop and they had some variegated Signature 40 wt quilting thread so I'll be trying that. Hope my machine likes it.

I am on block #34 of 35 blocks on my queen size quilt that I've been trying to finish hand quilting for awhile now. I want that on my bed so I can get on with this new skill and turn out some pieces.

This a gorgeous Cyn. I can't imagine what it will look like when you're done practicing as this is beautiful

Thank you, Carrie. I'm going to do a small test piece to be sure my machine likes the new thread. I will be putting the small quilt together later today, not sure when I'll get that actually started. Sadly, will probably be doing a necropsy on a hen today so some of this may be shoved aside until later.

Wow, you have really gotten good, Cyn! You really inspire me to get back to the sewing machine! I have a jelly roll strip quilt that has been sitting on the machine half done since September.

You know, if you want to practice more, you are welcome to come play with my longarm.

I have a Juki TL98 that is similar to the Brother you pictured here

I bought it used for $500 about 10 years ago to use on a Grace Quilting Frame. It is an absolute power horse. I love it for sewing long straight seams. It seems to go from very slow to supersonic in a flash. Fastest seams ever!

Terrie, dear friend! So happy to hear from you. That means so much coming from you, Miss Master Quilter! I hope I can do this on my little Brother you guys gave me, gosh, was it almost 5 years ago now??! It's handling my practice sessions on these small pieces as long as I give it the thread it wants.

I am still saving up for that dedicated FMQ machine. I have about half the price of the Juki I am considering, most of that Brother 1500 if I decided to go that route. The Brother I am still considering is almost identical to your Juki TL98, as you said, the 98 being the predecessor, I'm told, to the 2000 and now, the 2010, which has speed control like the Brother I'm currently using. I do use that speed control, too!

In the spirit of "Just Do It", I'm doing it. The places that I "jagged" where it is supposed to be rounded are due mostly to trying to shove the bulk through that 5.5" throat space and the drag on the work surface the rest of the quilt is making. However, I like the variegated thread and the machine likes the Signature 40 wt thread, too. Will probably be buying more of it in the future.

I didn't lose my hen yesterday but she may be gone this morning. I haven't been out yet, drinking my coffee to fortify myself for that.

I did more on the baby quilt later in the day.The above pictures are the front and back of the same quilt, to clarify. I picked the Waverly print with the Paris theme for the back because it had all the main colors on that were on the front pieced side. Those Waverly fabrics at Walmart are only $3.97/yd and they are pretty good quality! I have quite a few of them but I want more in my stash. Lots of them coordinate well together.

I did not intend to quilt lines so close together. I find I am tending to do that. Have to work next time on making larger motifs.
