My husband will never learn. He ASKED me to take him to the feed store today to buy deer corn. I walked in the door and immediately heard cheeping. I should have walked back out. But no. I HAD to go look.

Three huge bins with all pullets of red sex links, buff orpingtons, barred rocks, RIR, australorps, and of course..... EE (that were marked as Ameraucanas). I glanced in the bin with the BO and EE and saw only one chipmunk so I thought I was safe. I was having a conversation with the manager about the chicks and she happened to mention that the white ones in with the BO were "Ameraucanas." My ears perked up. I had to look.

And that was that. There was one with brown on its head. Picked her up. Glanced back down into the bin and saw the biggest cheeks I'd ever seen. Picked her up and told the manager to get me a box.

Came home with three.

The manager knows I'm a sucker and gave me two chicks from the back room that are not doing well. One has a bulging eye and the other is not going to make it. She's very light, so she hasn't eaten and both eyes are sealed shut. Her comb is crooked, so I'm thinking she hatched deformed and is lucky to have lived this long. They're both BOs.
This is the one with the most hope for making it, but I'm not counting on it.

But I'm SOOOO excited to find some white EE!!!! So cool! I resisted the urge to take the last chipmunk one. I already have five full grown EE that are various shades of adult chipmunk. I wanted the ones I don't have.

Happy Day!

So pretty! I love my white and buff-laced EEs. They're so beautiful. You scored there!

Hoping the sick BO's do okay. Good luck!

My flock would never be complete without a few EE or Americaunas running around. They are very intelligent and form a strong bond with people. I bought six pullets at Agway many years ago and one turned out to be a roo. I named him Friday because it must have been a Friday afternoon when these chicks were sexed

. It turned out to be a good thing because I was able to raise a few Americauna chicks and keep that line going. As for the chick with the crusted up eyes, can you try cleaning them up with a moistened paper towel so at least the chick can see to eat and drink? Sometimes I will open a chick's beak and place a pellet of feed soaked in water in its mouth. Most chicks will readily swallow it if they are not too far gone.
