If I were you I would call whatever rescue you can that will come get them. Some rescues will drive several hours to save a life - and that way your neighbor does not need to know you are involved (whereas if you keep them it will exacerbate the situation). I also would not lie - I would just politely state the truth - it does not seem they would care where their dogs are - IF they come looking.

I wouldn't tell her you shot it. Bury it and if she asks tell her you saw it running around but don't know where it is. LIE. lol

Agreed! Shoot them and LIE.

Please stay on topic.

This is not a City People vs Country People discussion.

If you cannot help the OP, please move on.

If you can not find a rescue or someone to take them the mercy full thing to do is shoot them and bury them. The poor dogs are starving, the will keep coming back again and again because they are starving to death.

Wow
I am amazed at how many people are saying just shoot the dogs that is pretty sad. I do understand that they are killing things but it is more the OWNERS fault then theres. I foster animals that have been shot and its not a pretty sight. To even think about hurting an animal when it is also trying to survive because of stupid owners but killing the dogs isn't the answer that is why this world is the way it is. Yes I'm sure many are thinking I am crazy but not as crazy as I am thinking of anyone that thinks that killing them is the right answer.
Anyway if you can do the proper thing since you are feeding them you seem to care somewhat or I hope you should take them to the nearest town. The shelters normally have kennels outside you can leave an animal after hrs. then there is no charge.
Yes I am a animal lover and work as Animal Control here in Colorado.

I love dogs too but I wouldn't take a strange dog in my car (sorry, but who knows what it might have or if it's mean or might turn mean) and shouldn't have to burn the gas to drive 30 min to the shelter (which, as I mentioned in our case, won't take out of county animals so I'd have to lie about it-the county we live in has no shelter and no rescues). Also the shelter there in the other town is only open certain hours and it's a giant pain to leave something there. They totally treat you as if you're just bring in your own pet that you don't want anymore. You can't just leave them outside the shelter there. So I'm sure it's different for different areas.

I would opt for trying to get a shelter/rescue group to take them. I would probably even drive them somewhere. If there is nothing then the humane thing to do is shoot to kill and bury them. You can't keep every dog,and you sure don't want to let them loose.

Frankly, a review of the sticky at the top of this section is in order. Please review it now.

Sadly, it is irrelevant whose fault it is, owner's or dog's. The poor neglected dog was on her property and she is forced to deal with it since the owners won't. If it's neglected and starving, it may be better off dead if there is no local animal control--trust me, many areas do not have animal control, so there may be no one to call other than the sheriff. If the sheriff's office has what they deem more important things to do with their time, then it's up to the home owner to deal with the dog.

I don't have the money to care for someone else's neglected animals. It's all I can do to care for my own family and my own dog and chickens so I certainly don't have gas money to go driving an hour away to find a place to take a stray dog. Some people think it's so easy to deal with stray dogs. Well, for many of us, it is not.
