The frost bite could be possible too, but wouldn't his comb/wattles show evidence as well? And nails would grow back.. wouldn't they? Haven't really experienced this before, but I thought they would. My girl keeps digging, so they stay very short/non-existant

Prolonged bouts of scaly leg mites can also cause permanant loss of nails. It looks like at least at some point, Lucky had scaly leg mites.

an upclose picture of those legs would be a great way for us to help you determine if he had or still HAS scaly leg mites...if he does, it definately needs to be taken care of before he gets anywhere near your girls! Better to vaseline up one set of chicken legs for a while rather than a whole flock of them later!
