Carpenters, experts help with (free) trusses building size.. photos

Oh good. Thanks Tim and Lensters! That is good to know. I thought they seemed really sturdy, frankly.

So, you are saying I could go with no overhang, as they were made to go flush on the frame?

They were built for no overhang, but I think it would be better to have the overhang. Like I said earlier, it would add ventilation, and if you decided not to use gutters, it would keep the water from running down the walls.

Oh, I see. I was hoping to have a 10 foot wide build, rather than an 8 foot .... BUT ..... hmmm, is there anyway I could add an overhang, to still have a 10 foot wide building? Then I could go with only 30 foot long, is what I am thinking.

Wow, lots of opinions on here... I'm with Suburban chick farmer... I would not add anything and I would not be afraid to run them 24" on center. Those gussets will hold those trusses together longer than pieces of plywood... if you don't believe me, try to remove one of the gussets.

The basic difference between a rafter and a truss (besides how they look) is that a truss will bear the roof load straight down on the walls. When using rafters, the roof load pushes outward on the top of the walls.

I would probably only have a 6 inch overhang on each side. I have always preferred to nail my trusses to the top plate through the gusset... this way, if the wood splits the gusset will still hold it together/down. This is exactly how we installed trusses for years before they started making us use rafter ties.

You could add rafter tails if you wanted to go with a ten foot wide building, basically you nail a 2x4 on the side of top board of the truss extending out however far you want the over hang.

I have been reading and viewing videos on installation, and I think I have it !

you may not find out much on adding rafter tails but you could certainly do it... basically you'll just be nailing a 2 x 4 to the side of each of the trusses. If you are going to do this, you might as well make them as long as you can to be able to use 2 full widths of plywood on each side of your roof. It will be a lot less cutting of plywood if you can use full sheets.

No, can't find much about them ... mostly decorative rafter tails. But, I think I have the idea now. So, basically, I am extending the top board longer; is that right?

I could do it, if I had a picture. Do you know where I can look at a photo?

I googled them and couldn't find any either. Just cut a piece of 2x4 2 feet long and then overlap the top board by 1 foot with 1 foot sticking out/down. You'll need some 3 inch nails or screws to attach them with.
