Carpenters/Woodworkers/ Saloon, Cafe Door Question

screen doors a good idea!

Shutters will be way too flimsy, and the dog probably could break them just by jumping on it. Plus it would be a pain in the *** for you after a while.

the split doors are called Dutch doors, and a good idea too!

You don't need a solid core door to make a Dutch door. Cut the door in half and you then insert a wooden block in the resulting void. I would recommend cutting an additional 7/8" from the bottom half and capping with a piece of 1x6 to form a ledge.

Since I'm not a great carpenter

I was going to say you'd need to stick something in that hollow part...but Opa explained it perfectly!!

Of course you could use a solid door, but they're pricey & you did say cheap....& those hollow core interior doors are affordable. Plus it'll look nice!

Agreed, but that is a LOT of work to finish it properly and have it present well. Based on the time/effort involved, this was why I suggested using shutters OR a solid core door. Both can be had for free on Craigslist without too much effort.

Speaking of CL..

We JUST picked up a pair of saloon doors today in Athol! $65 bucks

The only other pair we could find on CL were in NY.. for $125..

Not sure if they are gonna work though... they are for a 30in door frame, and our frame is 36 in...
Any ideas??
Hubby was thinking of adding 3in trim board to each side of the door frame ..or just adding trim board to the inside edges of the doors themselves, to fill in the gap.

You need to make sure it's a solid core door, otherwise when you cut it down to size your going to just have 2 layers. You could get some shutters from Lowes and some double action hinges. Chances are though that it wont stop a dog. Their just going to push right through it anyways.

Drat!! Phooey!
I dont think she will push through it.. i'll have it latched... shes pretty good about not pushing "through" things... she just likes to "jump" them...
Shes my problem child...

Now hes thinking of getting a wood door and just cutting it in half..or 3/4 high(high enough so she cant jump it).... and leaving the top off the door..
LOL... god help me...

lol....(edited to add) looks like OPA beat me too it!! ............Even if you go with a flat hollow core door you can easily cut a piece of wood to fit between the skins of the door and cap it off on the top and sides with a trim board.
