Carpeted roost, anyone else do this?

If mites might be a problem, seems to me that one could sprinkle the carpet with DE, or change it regularly like once a week. If the carpet is just a scrap, those could be free.
Coon got my chickens, so I won't be trying any carpets this winter...will wait until spring to try again.

I have indoor/outdoor carpet that I found at HD. I think it cost $17 for a 6 x 8 piece but the free find is a great idea. One of my gals had a bad case of bumblefoot and my vet suggested it. Have been on the roosts since April. The roost is removable and the carpet can be washed easily. No problem with poop on it either. I have not seen any mites..knock on wood!

I even have it on the outside roosts. Lessens the chance of splinters.

I only have 4 girls in my coop and it gets mighty cold at night. I found that nobody wanted to be on the end of the roost bar at night, and the wall side seems to be the best spot. So I added a piece of indoor/outdoor carpet to the wall side and as for the open end on the roost bar, I took a square piece of ply wood and attached this same carpet to it and with an L bracket, attached it to the roost bar. That way either everybody has a body next to them or a piece of carpet to hold in the heat.

I too was worried about mites, so I sprinkle them with DE occasionally as precaution. During the summer the carpet comes out.

you all have great idea's and yep bumble foot would be way easier to heal on a carpeted roost. since its so cold here, and no mites or lice etc, the roosts stay clan, but come spring I will add new carpeting. mine was free from local carpet shop, going back this spring to get more. my chickens love it and the one with the real crooked toes can get on the roost with out slipping and harming her self, and she now stays on the roost way better.
