Yes, they should have grit with it. I don't see a problem with the carrot pulp though, that stuff is basically like baby food when it comes out of the juicer. Most people are pretty anti-giving them anything but chick starter and then layer feed, it seems like, but I don't feed much of either one and I do ok. I've lost a lot of chicks this year, but none of it was food related, it was something they came from the hatchery sick with. Mine eat vegetables and fruits on a daily basis, I just chop them up small enough to be swallowed easily. When I first offered the chicks grit, they would go wild over it and eat way too much, so the first couple of weeks, I would only give them the grit dish during a meal for an hour or so, then take it away. After a while, they learned to regulate themselves better on the grit and now I can leave it with them all the time.
 
Gosh, just feed grit regaurdless!!!!! Give em treats in small amounts with grit. Bottom line, feed grit!!!
