I just dug around and found this thread. About 15-20 years ago I used to live in Cary. When I moved there, I thought I could live with the HOA rules et. al. I was so wrong. What I found to be just as bad was the attitude of the folks that liked the HOA. I was clearly an outsider. I had a small vegetable garden, a boat and and I used my garage as a workshop. My vehicles stayed parked outside. I was clearly out of touch in my subdivision. After living there for less than 3 years, I sold my house for a ridiculous profit, and got the hell out of Dodge (Cary). I make it a point to stay away whenever I can.
My advice- just move. Life is way too short to have "associations" tell you what color you can paint your house.
