Castor oil to Start Labor

The idea with castor oil is- stimulate the bowel, stilmulate the uterus.

There isn't much than can be done if the body truly isn't ready, but sometimes, the body, will respond to a "jump start" if its ready to go.

There are some studies that have linked castor oil to merconium issues, from fetal stress, due to possible uterine hyperstimulation, which is a risk of prosteglandin inductions.

our saying in the birth biz is- the way to get a baby out is the same way to get a baby in- with gentle words, touch, and motion, primal movement and sounds, and most importantly, that ability to release control and let the love flow!

best wishes for your new little one

BTW, on the colostrum thing, most women start producing it around the 6th month of pregnancy. Milk production is signal to begin with the release of the placenta, then from there on, maintaing high prolactin levels in your body with nipple stimulation from nursing or pumping. The concern with using your pump to start labor, again, would be possible uterine hyperstimulation, so just use caution.

I have seen castor oil work, but it seems to be the dehydration factor. As soon as an IV goes in and a bolus of fluid is given, those contractions almost always stop. If she is ready, the contractions may continue on and true labor will follow. If she is NOT ready, even huge doses of IV Pirtocin do not work, thus our almost 50% c-section rates these days. Everyone is being induced to have their babies. Most are not over due, like you guys. Tell her to be patient, I know it is hard though. Good luck, from an old, (tired) L&D nurse. Henz

I just thought I'd check in to see if baby was here.

I was going to add that 12 days overdue doesn't mean much, especially if your wife is in good health, the baby is fine, and this is a first baby. 40 weeks is an average human gestation, the range of normal is probably pretty wide. I know that mentally it feels like forever. My second was one week "overdue" and it felt like a day past eternity.

I had a friend whose first child was very early, so they stopped labor with the second. He was born at 39 weeks, over 10 pounds, no vernix, three teeth, and almost 24 inches long. He was over cooked, and labor started because he was ready to come out.

Hope all is well..................

Yes! She was born at 9:55pm on the 25th. She was 8 lbs 14 oz and 22 in long. Her name is Lydia. My wife was admitted at 9:45pm, so we cut it pretty close. That was fine as it was much better for her to labor at home. We didn't intend on cutting that close.

Unfortunatly, a few hours after birth, Lydia's breathing began to get very rapid (160 BPM). They did a x-ray and determined she had pnemonia. The doctors said it had a lot to do with the short delivery (3 pushes). They said typically during birthing, the fluid in the lungs in squeezed during delivery. With such little pushing, the fluid didn't have a chance to be released. Somehow she picked up a common bacteria that made it's way into her lungs. We ended up spending 10 days in the hospital, so she could recieve a full treatment of antibiotics. We have been home since Friday, and she seems to be doing well. She was back to her birth weight 5 days after she was born. When we left the hospital, she weighed 9 lbs 3 oz, so Mommies milk is putting on the weight.

She smiles more than any baby I have ever seen at her age. I know she isn't aware of what she's doing, but it sure makes us feel good.

She weighs almost as much as my Hayden does now at 1 month! LOL!

Hayden had the same thing when he was born, the fluid wasn't all out of his lungs. I was lucky he didn't have pneumonia tho, he just puked alot, lol.

Glad to hear everyone is doing great now!
