Cat attacked by chicken house - coyote?? "predator" id on pg 3

I'd be afraid of that too. What are the possible predators in your area that could do the damage that this one did?

Do you think perhaps you interrupted the attack, or perhaps the dog may have? I agree with "Rare Feathers Farm", a coyote would try to run off with the whole kill but would grab whatever it could if it sensed that it would be interrupted.
I'm sorry about Cain, cats with great personalities are hard to find.

This sounds like the work of a dog i have seen a cat or 2 killed by a dog threw the years and that is the first place they grab then shake the life out of them .

Most wild critters kill to eat so i do not think you kitty would have been left behind.

Since it appeared to be an attack that isnt typical, it could have been a rabid predator. Any predator with rabies wouldn't leave "normal" evidence.

I'm very sorry about your loss, being an avid cat lover myself I know that great cats don't come along very often and when they do it is a heartbreak to loose them.

I'd lean more toward a dog attack, but coyote is also possible--particularly since you have a dog that may have scared it off. It's horrible to lose them like that I know.

You may not be interested, especially right now, but if you're anywhere close to me I'd be happy to let you know the next time I have kittens. My pets are all fixed but I take in orphans that need to be bottle fed sometimes and they are pretty much bomb proof when they leave my house--kids, cats, dogs, chickens, turkeys, ducks, etc. so they're well able to adapt to anything without getting all skittish.

I'm thinking coyote or large dog. I've seen coyotes catch and carry prey around their middle before.

Sorry to hear about your cat, it is strange that the injuries were to the stomach area. Coyotes almost always go for the throat and/or back of the neck. I have to deal with looseing lambs to them all the time. Almost 100% of the bite marks are on the neck. Housecats are also a favorite meal of bobcats but they usually kill them and take them away to a more private area to eat. Whatever attacked your cat was probably frightened away before it had the chance to finish him off. My guess would be a neighbors dog that was attracted by your chickens. Hope you get the sucker!!

I'm in Missouri so the predators would be foxes, possums, raccoons, coyotes, dogs, hawks, owls and bobcats. I think that covers everything that I Know are in my immediate area.

I do think a coyote would have packed him off - unless my dog interrupted him or Cain managed to get out of his reach.

The saddest part is that Cain was a playmate to my house dog and would roll over to play with her. I'm not sure if he would roll over to play with a strange dog or a wild animal.

Right now I can't find one of my other cats and I haven't seen him all day. The one I'm missing hangs out with the one that was killed. Of course I am talking about a cat and they don't always come when you call them...

I've decided to leave poor Cain by the chicken house tonight. He is wrapped up and I feel very morbid about it. However, I'm thinking a coyote or other wild animal would come back for him - while a dog would not.

I have (hopefully) six other cats. They have all been strays or dumpees I've taken in over the years. I found Cain and his brother Abel at a local (Abels) gas station last year. Cain growled at me when I picked him up - hence the name Cain and Abel. His brother is the one MIA.

I am leaning towards a neighbors dog, I'm going to see about rigging up a camera to the outside of my chicken house. I'm pretty sure whatever it is will be back....
