I use pine pellets for my litter box. Scooping is a bit harder than clay litter, but the litter can go into a compost pile. The cats don't mind the pine pellets.

Some cats only drink from moving water. I used to have a normal waterer, but my cat would drag the dish to make the water slosh before drinking it. It made a huge mess, so I got a cat fountain and have no more issues. Yours might be fine with still water, it depends on the cat.

Feed your cat dental treats or brush their teeth once a week... I assumed feeding cats dry kibble would prevent dental issues, and now most of my cats have minor gingivitis (an incurable mouth infection). Dental care is super important!

Stay away from foods with a high ash or bone content... those can cause some really bad health problems. Foods with high amounts of corn aren't great either.
