Just to let you know, things are back to normal. The first 24 hrs she would let me pet and pick her up but as of yesterday she's back to shying away from me again.
She does come when DW calls, at least for now, as long as she's being fed. Maybe this will be a teachable moment.
Teachable moment for who? You and your wife or the cat?
Sounds like your cat is a little standoffish and not the lovy dovy type - and then only on her terms and not her humans. Or she would be better suited to be the only cat in the house so she could be the princess?

She was basically a feral kitten who is only lovey dovey my wife. Actually she was great as a kitten but once I took her to the vet for her first exam and shots became very afraid of me and would run whenever I came near her. We have 4 other cats that she gets along with just fine with but has never acknowledged her name nor come when called. Now that she's back from her outdoor adventure she seems more amendable to coming at feeding time when called. This may help prevent a repeat of her escape. While we try to keep her inside, accidents can happen and if we can teach her to come it will be worth it.
