I have seen a few local cats come around and stay around my chickens or outside their coop .do cats eat chickens and what can i do to keep cats away

My cats leave the chickens alone. The chickens will chase the cats around if they feel the cats are too close. That being said, i bet a hungry cat could kill a chicken, especially if its a smaller breed chicken

Ok i will take some type of precaution and maybe anyway make sure the door is securer

My cat doesn't bother our chickens. But I haven't allowed her around small chicks. There was a feral cat here for a couple of years. I used to feed him for insurance that he wouldn't even think about the chickens. He never bothered them either.

The only thing is i have realised a stray cats always visits and maybe is hungry even when it knows im looking it wont go

You could feed them. Maybe they will hang around and catch mice for you. I bet your chickens will be ok
Yh i have realised its not jus the chickens they come for next door there are a lot of rats and they will need catching

It entirely depends on the cat. Random feral cats were my biggest concern when I was predator proofing here. We live in the country and everyone has a batch of barncats on their land so they mostly keep to their own turf but there are a few semi feral cats who are trouble for us all. One of them sent me to the hospital even!

I have three of my own cats, one enormous male adult rescue, one girl rescued as a runt and now a little over a year who prefers to stay indoors, and one female barn cat who came with the land and now lives inside with us at night and is the biggest baby ever. Of the three of them, the youngest is the only one I watch closely. I've raised the chickens around them just as I have with my kids, training the cats to respect the chickens. When they're chicks, my youngest cat thinks she stands a chance but after the first crew grew up quickly to be bigger than her (and way bossier!) she now knows they aren't too be messed with. My other two cats adore the chickens and always come out to the coop with me to watch them.

Yeah let them catch rats. Cats are awesome like that haha. As much as i hate stepping on dead mice on my doorstep, I love that the cats do their job
