Then you've not given them enough places to sharpen their claws. I built my own cat trees (2) from reclaimed wood and old(er) carpet (installed hardwood) and still have all our furniture untouched. Might give your kids some other places to scratch... even a couple 4' 2x4's, in a vertical positions, will get used. Our kids scratch on all the bare wood they can. They have learned to not like scratching on things that have material on them. Bare wood is their preference, but there is some clean up of shredded wood, regularly. Just hit it with the vac when going around the house.
BTW, it's cat belly season...

We live in a log cabin - so they feel free to scratch the door frames, logs and - yes - the furniture!
