My Moo is dying. My Moo. The most sensitive, sweet, obedient, present, gentle, smart and absolutely delightful little animal I've ever known. He was poisoned, by something he ate, a houseplant, and his kidneys are in acute failure. The leaf got stuck in his small intestine and my vet treated that - he eventually eliminated it. But they didn't do any blood work, and they didn't listen to me when I repeatedly told them that he had shut down. I brought him in again and because he ate a few bites of cat food they gave him, they decided he was fine. They also traumatized him while he was getting a barium procedure there. They turned him into an out of control, violent cat that they had to sedate. They didn't give him patience and they didn't take care for his mental well being. He's been sick for well over ten days. I was feeding him with a syringe and waiting for him to improve, thinking it might be the anti-biotic, or psychological trauma, but last night he started having some pre-seizure like movements and now he's in the emergency hospital. There's an extremely slight chance his kidneys will heal, but I fear I am losing my little angel. I'm so very sad, I just wanted to put it out there. He's only 14 months old.

I'm crying with you , can you share what kind of house plant Moo ate ? I am so sad he didn't get the kind of care he needs. Some give extra care and have patience and some should get another job, once compassion is gone ....move on to another job please.

Could you give him anything to help naturally ?probiotics maybe ?

Thank you. I agree - I thought these were good vets. I did note some lack of compassion, which was disturbing. The cone they put on his head after they inserted a catheter was way too big and they didn't think it was a problem. I was horrified by it. Thinking he was going to have surgery the next day, I researched and found these wonderful little garments for cats and dogs made by Tulane's Closet. There's no comparison between the comfort of one of these cotton suits and one of those inhumane cones. It was awful watching this little 6 lb cat try to hold his head up from the weight of the thing. He couldn't even walk as it just would hit the floor and get stuck. Here is a link to the company that makes the cone alternatives. They overnighted it and I had it in time, but didn't need it in the end. http://www.tulanescloset.com

Thanks too for the flowers. Moo probably ate two leaves from a Mammey Croton plant. I bought it at HD. Never even considered it was a problem.

I'm going to see my little friend this eve. They say his heart and lungs sound good. I guess that's good, but I wait anxiously for the next bloodwork. The problem is how long he's been sick. Acute kidney failure, if caught early is not necessarily fatal. At this late stage, he needs a miracle, and he deserves one. I don't think there is anything I can give him right now, but if he makes it, I will research kidney strengthening everything.

I am so very sorry to hear that.
But cats have 9 lives, it could very well have a miracle.

We had a cat named Miracle who was near death and we resuscitated it. There is always hope.

Yes, you are right. That's what my sister said too. I need to be more positive about his recovery. He's young and he was very healthy. I'm at the hospital now waiting to see him. He can be my little miracle cat.

Sorry to hear about your kitty Silkienation. If your cat is on IV fluids now there is a chance his kidneys can start to recover. Only time will tell. I had a cat once that was sick at 5 months old. She had kidney failure and the vets said she wouldn't live. She made it to 9 years old despite only having a small portion of her kidneys functioning. There were ups and downs with her Kidney failure (it was chronic and a life long disease), but for the most part she lived a normal life just like any other cat. Best wishing going out for both of you.

Thank you Ochochicas. He's in the state's fancy animal hospital getting IV fluids. His creatinine level was 20 when I brought him in and it's down to 10. The vet STILL won't say he'll likely be okay. He says that he's seen some cats' levels plateau before getting down to a normal level, which would not be good. He's waiting until it goes down to about 5. Well, I'm encouraged.

They think it may not have been the plant, but a stone that blocked his kidney. Strange that the two events would happen together, but coincidences do occur. It's encouraging to hear about your cat. 9 is a bit premature, but it's not bad and it's immeasurably better than 5 months! Yes, if Moo makes it, he too will have chronic kidney disease. as the vet says there is a lot of damage to the architecture of his kidneys. I grieved a lot yesterday and today, and I was so distraught about him suffering, but I went to see him tonight and I feel much better. I had no hope, but now I do. I just love this little guy so much. He goes around the house letting out this tremolo twerping sound when he's happy, never heard a cat make a sound like that.

How are your chickens? Did you get more? Have the vaccinated ones done well? Has Marek's let you and your flock be?
