Cause of Death

i'm so sorry for your loss. We recently lost a duck to something similar. X-rays at our vet showed something in her stomach, we thought. i couldn't afford surgery, but they were kind enough to do it for free. Seems she swallowed some small rocks, one was sharp and perforated her stomach, so the rocks were actually in her abdomen. They were able to clean everything and sew her up, but she crashed when she was just coming out of the anesthesia and we lost her. i don't know why she was eating rocks. Our ducks always have food out, plus get peas and lettuce every single day. But they just love to burrow those bills in the ground searching for something new.

You can only do the best you can to keep them safe. Some things, you just can't prevent. Sincere condolences again on your loss.

This is what she swallowed, but when I found it in her belly it was bent to heck. I saw that both ends were pointy and it was a staple.

This is so heartbreaking

but we can all learn from this to be more careful about our duck's surroundings. It's almost like childproofing a home and yard.

these things do happen. but I'm glad you found out the cause for the sake of all your other ducks.

I am so sorry. Thanks for posting this because I too and going to walk my yard again.. Its pretty clean but like yours they might find something I have missed.... Hugs to you..

So far I've only been able to find the end of a plastic zip tie, and one screw from a build. Couple pieces of glass emerge after every good rain, so I found some of that yesterday. But nothing like that staple! I've only ever seen that kind on wooden shipping crates.

Besides being educational, I did feel compelled to look around for another duck, and found a female the same age (Black Swedish though) who needed a home with other ducks. She thinks she's a German Shepherd and I happen to have a friendly one! (I have 2, but the other can't be trusted) so I've been spending a lot of time out there with the new duck getting her acclimated. She's staying in a XXL dog crate in the coop, gets let out with everyone when I'm out there. I bring Logan and we follow the main ducks, and she'll go from following Logan to catching up with the duck group. She's starting to think she might be a duck after all.

She climbed into my lap yesterday, on her own! So I lost my best breeder female, but gained a super friendly Swedish Shepherd Duck.

Awww....that is so sweet!

I am sorry you lost your hen. You can not find everything...no matter how hard you try.

I live on an OLD farm, the piece of property we own used to be the hired hand's place. My hubby's grandparents lived here just before us, while the grandparents took GREAT care of the place and had HUGE gardens...we still find pieces of things when we till up the gardens.... Our one garden is only 3 years old...you can imagine how much glass and metal pieces I am still pulling out, and that area was tilled up 5-10 yrs ago for new drain tile...

While "we" try to keep our place clean and looking nice....not everyone before "us" cared as much to do so.

So, I am sure you are in the same boat....Keep up the diligence and some day maybe our grandchildren will live in a trash free place.
