Welcome to the Chicken Club! This is the place to be! You will learn more and laugh more than you ever thought possible! Especially when @Chickassan is involved!
She is a hoot!
(No harm meant there. It was just a joke.)
I fell victim to complacency myself earlier this week and I usually am very conscientious of how I do business with my birds. My run is not completely secured to the coop yet and there is a makeshift gate right next to the coop. Tuesday night, I forgot to close it. Wednesday morning right after sunrise I looked out and saw one of my black Ameraucanas, pretty as you please, strutting across the deck!
What?!? I took off up to the coop to see what had happened and saw that it was my fault. My birds do free range so them being out was not a tragedy, but...
Now here’s the light hearted part - there was one other hen out so that meant that 24 other birds passed by that gate and did not even notice it being open. Now that shows you what creatures of habit these birds can be.

I have wondered that before, myself. I guess there’s a bunch of us that are older than dirt and have nothing that we like better than to talk chicken. Most of the young whipper snappers are out there, busy taking selfies. How do so many of you have time to read and post replies this early in the morning on a weekday?
