Anybody here have a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel??

I never really considered one before because I know they can be prone to a lot of health issues, especially heart and neurological issues, which scared me, but I saw a bunch at an agility trial today and met some of them and they were just such sweet sweet dogs. Plus I never knew they could do agility which was surprising and awesome to me because I want to do agility with any future dog(s). But what really sold me was that they seem to commonly be depicted/described as miniature Goldens. They apparently have that sweet Golden like personality. Obviously separate breeds but they just love everyone and are trainable apparently. And this seems to be a pretty common description both from the owners I met and from reading online. That was great news to be because I have been considering a Golden for my next dog, and still might get one, but they can be pretty large and I was concerned if I ever moved to an apartment or something that I might not be able to take one with me. So a much smaller dog that fits weight limits but still has that sweet Golden personality and enough energy to do agility and/or nose work or hike is perfect. Especially if it doesn’t have that “small dog attitude.” Ha

But does anyone have experience with this breed?? The health issues do scare me. I know with a reputable breeder it might not really be an issue but still. And also I know they are a separate breed from the Goldens so any breed specific info or personality traits, things to watch out for or whatever?

Also does anyone have experience with Papillons or Havanese? Because those are some other breeds I am considering. I know the pap is considering another toy spaniel but perhaps a little bit more energetic and a little smaller?? Is that right? Any other differences between the two? I just don’t know if one would be better for sports and tricks/training or not??

Don’t really have very much criteria other than friendly, playful, loving, and can train. I’m big into training and want to try agility or nose work as well as just general obedience work and tricks. And I like going on walks with dogs and/or hiking if a little dog can keep up. But obviously those aren’t necessarily requirements. I will love any dog even if it’s not up to any of that stuff. As long as it’s not aggressive/mean/vicious.

Also speaking of non aggressive, it would need to get along with the cat and the chickens. Can separate if necessary but preferably they would be friends or at least get along. All the animals already have experience with dogs much much larger than these breeds. We had a 140 pound Black Lab/Great Pyrenees mix for 6 1/2 years (just put him down in December) and my brothers two rescues (~85 pounds and ~65 pounds respectively) have visited a couple times as have my friends two Goldens. So the cat is definitely very dog experienced but still. I would prefer a dog that doesn’t try to eat the cat.

Anyway, I don’t mean to get too detailed and specific. It’s fine if someone doesn’t have answers to all the questions, I know I have made some similar posts like this in the past, and I know there are a lot of breeds I want, but this one finally actually seems like it might be a good fit. So mostly looking for breed specific info and experiences and/or photos or stories of your dogs. Can kind of be a CKCS lovers thread. But of course if anyone has any info or input on the other stuff I will gladly take it.

Thank you.

Did you take any video today of the fake Golden Retrievers?

I think they sound like the perfect sized dog for you.

Unfortunately not. :( I didn’t get any pictures or video today. :( didn’t really think of it plus I was with my friends and didn’t really pull my phone out too much haha there were so many gorgeous ones though. :love as well as some gorgeous Paps; Shelties; tons of gorgeous Goldens; a pair of Bernese Mountain Dogs; a lovely Boxer (just for you!); a nice looking, super athletic, little Lab; a gorgeous GSD, and even two absolutely GORGEOUS Belgian Tervurens. :love

But yes! I think they’re a good size too!! Not too small and fragile like some toy breeds but not huge either. That’s my biggest thing with the Paps. Their max size is like 9 or 10 pounds, smallest like 7.... wayyyy too small and fragile for my house and life LOL

I think the CKCS are like 13-18 lbs. Perfect size lol

I'm thinking my next dog will be a midsized one too.
I'm checking out these fake Golden's now although I think I have decided I will end up with only shelter mutts here on out.

Yeah I think midsized dogs are the best!! Even slightly bigger like 20-40 is good too but something this size I think is perfect haha

And yesss please do!! They are so cute!! Haha also... love the Fake Goldens name you have dubbed them with. :lau

But aw that’s awesome!! Shelter mutts are amazing!!
