Cayenne pepper and now all blackhead symptoms are gone!

I wonder if that's the reason garlic can sometimes treat coccidiosis, even though it can kill the birds it kills the coccidia first and the birds are usually strong enough to survive, just thinking out loud, trying to learn as much as I can about this.

It would be interesting to see some published info on the various "natural" treatments. I think I saw some for oregano being used to treat coccidia and bacterial infections, but I have not see any for garlic, pumpkin seeds, etc.

Anyone in the US can get Fish Zole, AquaZole, Meditrich etc online. Not much that we can't get in the US.

I understand what you are trying to say but shipping would have taken too long and he would have died if I didn't do anything. So I did something. Anything. And as we all know, acting fast is the most important part of treatment. The local fish store ordered it in for me but it wasn't there until the next ship date; 5 days from the time I asked for it (which was the fastest turnaround time for any of the metronidazole medications I could find). So I started the cayenne in hopes that it would actually keep him alive until I could pick the Fish Zole up but it had worked so well I just kept using it. I do very much appreciate your are a wealth of info but I'm not an idiot. Please re-read my initial post and see I did in fact say I had tried to find some Fish Zole. It is in the second block of text.

The most important thing is that I am not saying one is better than the other. I am just trying to offer up a treatment plan for those who may have been in the same situation I was in: sick turkey, no metronidazole (or any other drugs that have shown success since none are technically approved for treatment), and looking for a solution. Maybe he was cured from the cayenne, maybe he just got better on his own (as I also said in my post) but what matters is I was looking for something like this when I was in this pickle and couldn't find it: a step by step for the cayenne "treatment." I figured if I posted this, someone in my same situation may get the help they need to hopefully fix a sick turkey. The additional information you posted may be helpful to those who were to lazy to read my post or were unaware of how much metronidazole is used successfully, which is great and I thank you for that. We're all just trying to do the the most important thing which is taking care of our birds the best way we can.

Again, thank you for all your info.

Metronidazole can be found at Petsmart and it's sold as API General Cure. Each pack contains 250mg metronidazole and 75mg praziquantel. Of course the praziquantel isn't needed, but it won't hurt and it will treat any tapes they might have.

The way you wrote the post below made it sound like you didn't live in the US.

Glad it worked for you, that's great. FYI, blackhead can be treated with metronidazole (fish-zole, Meditrich, aquazole, Flagyl, etc.). The dose I use is 23mg per pound once a day for five days. Birds with blackhead should also be treated with a de-wormer that kills cecal worms.

I live somewhere where Fish Zole is unavailable, and every other metronidazole product! Oh lord did I try to find it... It seemed like my only hope.  But since I couldn't get it locally that is why I tried the cayenne.  And I did treat with Valbazen after the turkey was strong enough to take it.  It's in the "Day 7" description.  Thanks though!

Nah. I live in rural Humboldt county. Sometimes it feels like another country though! Haha! I really did think that PetCo would have it (we don't have a petsmart) but when I drove there (I surely thought Eureka would have SOMETHING... which is like a 45 minute drive) they told me they had just "gone green" and so they don't carry medication "like that" anymore. You can imagine how my blood started to boil! Tried all the fish stores, no "zole" products "on hand" (order only). Tried all the feed stores (called everything within an hour drive). Nothing with it. Even tried the local livestock supply. Nothing. I really did try. I think one of the fish stores is definitely going to carry it now, though! They did say they used to carry products with it but for some reason they "didn't have it in." I swear I thought I was being punished for something... spending an entire day looking for what should be a common med!

And yes I asked for brand name Flagyl too...ANYTHING with metronidazole in it

Do you guys feed all those spices all the time or just once a week or so?
I try to keep a little in their feed all the time. When I open a new bag, I mix it right in. And I do a minimum of the garlic and oregano.

I've done all of it since the day I got them / hatched them and none have fallen ill, so you can read all you want on the internet, but it doesn't compare to actually doing it. Yes, onions are toxic to birds, as well as potatoes and avocados. But there is little factual evidence of other 'might be harmful' foods.

Until then, I'll keep feeding my birds natural foods just like I eat myself.

For people that think pharmaceutical drugs are the answer, maybe you should read up more on those, the FDA and GMOs. But then again, ignorance is bliss!

I'm kinda trying to figure out a schedule with the cayenne. I don't put any other "herbal" additives in to my poultry's feed. Now that I've read studies that show birds don't feel the spicy capsaicin like mammals do I don't feel hesitant about putting it in their food as a supplement. I'm going to try a once a month additive, maybe for three days? I do chemically worm my birds twice a year since they do free range so I'm not using the cayenne as a cure. I'm using it as a preventative to keep parasites/infection down between wormings. And I will be doing it to all my birds: turkeys, chickens, guineas... maybe the ducks. Haven't decided on that yet! As time progresses, maybe I'll let you all know how I've modified my cayenne treatments!
