Yes I love cayugas but they are definitely not small and are easily killed

I recommend Muscovys , yes they can fly but not that much to fly off , they are quiet hardy and great at raising their own young and other young ( some of mine adopted American buff goslings ) they too are quiet and great do anyone wanting to get some expierence in before entering the duck world )

They fly just enough to get away from predators . And have great temperament

Thanks for your reply! I will check into those.

Hi Everyone! I have never had ducks before but am considering it. After much research online, I'm thinking I want to get Cayugas. The positives (that I've read about) are that they are small, pretty, relatively quiet, decent layers, can be friendly and don't fly. Plus I think the black eggs are pretty cool!
I have chickens. Well, chicks. I lost all of my chickens to the fox :-( so I'm starting a new flock and figured it would be a good time to add ducks into the mix. I was thinking 3 hens and 1 drake.
Does anyone have any advice?

Duck math is like chicken math...... I have Rouens, Pekins and Cayugas. in a brooder and indoors they can be a mess. Outdoors they are easier to manage. The Cayuga ducklings will be moving this weekend to the brooder in the garage with the Turkey poults. I also have 2 bantam chickens that need to go out with the Welsummers.....

So we have 7 ducks, 2 pekin hens, 1 Rouen hen, 1 Rouen drake, 1 Cayuga unknown, 1 blue runner hen, 1 blue Swedish unknown. We think the blue Swedish is female and the Cayuga is a drake. The thing is our pekins and rouens are already an established flock, so the 3 new babies won't be going in with the old guys. I would like to get a a silver WH pair, is it okay to have a WH drake, a Cayuga drake and a Rouen drake all living together with 6 hens?? Is that an OK number to have and you think they'll all be alright?? They will be free ranging A LOT. so do you think those numbers will be fine?? There's still always a chance my Cayuga might be a hen.
