Cayuga ducks???

We have our Cayuga ducks next to our bedroom window and don't hear anything from them unless the Rouen drake comes up to their pen and then it is a quiet not even quack, just a "don't mess with me" throat sound. Then when I go out, he tells me they want fresh water in their pool, but other than that they are very quiet. I have a drake with 2 females and they are quiet. The mallards and rouens make the typical duck noise like Donald Duck did on the cartoon but it is not too often but definitely not quiet. The Cayugas are definitely quiet. Have fun!

The hens will lay with or without a drake. Only need a drake if you want the eggs to be fertile.

In that case you really can't go wrong...just go with what ever appeals most to you

Don't feel bad, many people I talk to about my chickens and ducks think you need a male for the girls to lay an egg until I remind them that we as humans don't.

Then the understanding comes into their eyes. I get 2 eggs a day from my two female cayugas. I have 27 days to wait for my ducklings (incubator is running).

I knew that chickens could lay with out a rooster, I was just a little foggy on the whole duck laying thing....

Good luck on the cayuga eggs

One of my cayuga girls rarely if ever quacks, the other quacks more but mainly when she gets split from the group or if the other ducks start going off or the group is excited. Alone they are not as noisy as our welsh harlequins. The 2 cayuga boys do make drake noises fairly often chatting with each other but its no where near as loud as a female duck's quack.

No ducks are really "quiet" except muscovys. But the less ducks the less noise, in groups they start having loud competitions. Also mine start quacking to get out of their house at sunrise. They don't make the best pet for close neighbors, but if the lot is big enough maybe try a corner of the yard farthest away from their homes.

If you want eggs and don't want baby ducks, get 2 females.

You don't need a male to get eggs. You only need a male to get fertile hatching eggs, which you don't need because you don't want to hatch ducklings.

All ducks have their own individual personalities... some are louder than others within a breed. Cayuga's really are pretty quiet tho, and they have a deeper quack than some of the other, more popular ducks, so it's less high pitched and "annoying" to the neighbors. I think of it more as a grunt

Muscovy don't quack at all. Mine are really friendly and enjoy being petted (though not picked up). Both Cayuga's and Muscovy will only lay seasonally so you won't get any eggs in winter - but you'll probably be all "egged out" by then - LOL!

One really interesting thing about Cayuga eggs is that the first of the season are coal black. Really strange to see. They fade to a dark grey-green, then lighter and lighter until they're white. Muscovy eggs are very large and sort of cream colored.
