I'm still looking into breeds, but was curious. Is it cruel to have a cayuga duck in DFW Texas, where temps can reach anywhere from 100*F to 115*F in August and September?

Frozen milk jugs and such, even frozen snacks can help with heat issues.
Oh yeah. I plan on getting three, but I think I'm leaning toward a varied flock... perhaps a cayuga, welsh harlequin, and something else.I find that most ducks are pretty heat hardy.. Just make sure they have plenty of shade and water throughout the days. What would be Really cruel though is buying only One duck.. Ducks are very social birds and Need to be in a group.. I would suggest getting three hens just in case if something happens to one and the other two still have each other.. I also would suggest not getting a drake.
Ah, sorry, I just assumed since you had just only said 'A Cayuga duck' Anyways.. A great breed I would suggest would be either a Rouen or a buff, Both great and friendly breeds.Oh yeah. Yus. New York feels pretty hot in the summer when I had visited in the past. But I don't know if they get in the 100's. Frozen milk jugs, that's a great idea btw. ThanksHi, hope you are enjoying BYC!
My guess is that if you have the right set up it MIGHT be OK. But if not, would not be cruel but rather deadly.Frozen milk jugs and such, even frozen snacks can help with heat issues.
Also... I'm thinking they are from the New York area (been a while since researching them) and seems like it can get pretty hot summers there. But here in CA, climate can vary so much by region that my thinking may be incorrect.
Good luck, they are beautiful birds!![]()
Nah. It is totally my fault. I wasn't clear in my original post, so I could totally see what you mean.Ah, sorry, I just assumed since you had just only said 'A Cayuga duck' Anyways.. A great breed I would suggest would be either a Rouen or a buff, Both great and friendly breeds.

I would have to say the buff, My Rouens can be pretty chatty.. My Buffs though aren't really that vocal.. They're super friendly though and love to be held/pettedNah. It is totally my fault. I wasn't clear in my original post, so I could totally see what you mean.
I know that how vocal a duck is really depends on the duck more than breed, but between the rouen and buff, which do you think is the most quiet?
