There is a happy middle there. Nothing wrong with a nice, well set up fenced run.

Ain't that the truth!!!! I got a coop/run combo for my 2 d'Uccle pullets and people acted like it was a battery cage. It was regulation size.

My youngest son got Campylobacter last year. 15yo boys aren't notorious for fastidious hygiene and while he *might* have gotten it from the chickens he might have gotten it from a dozen other possible sources. We tell our kids to wash their hands after tending animals and doing yard chores and he's now much better about it because suffering the consequences of casual hygiene is a great teacher.
