cedar/pine shavings

No cedar. I know it's toxic for lots of small animals. We just use a bit of pine bedding from one of the big bales we get for the horses.

But for the first few days, we put newspaper over it until they learn where and what the food is.

The oils in cedar shavings that make them smell so good are toxic to chickens, especially little baby ones! I don't recommend newspaper either, as it can be slippery for them. Paper towels are good; I use puppy potty training pads the first 3 days, then move them to pine shavings.
