Bad or should I say unsubstantiated information runs rampant on this site.
I have received lots of good advice and help from the BYC community. But I also have books on chickens and look some things up on the internet as I research an issue. I don't mind getting different opinions and/or conflicting facts because in the end I know I have to choose what path seems to be the best for me. I don't complain about free advice given by people who have no other intention than to help others. I have never seen anyone here intentionally give out bad advice on this BYC forum. I have seen bad/incorrect/uninformed advice getting called out by other members if it does happen, but almost always in a polite manner and the conversations continue.
Murry McMurry hatchery has an article dated Nov 17,2011: Is Cedar a Suitable Chicken Coop Building Material which states: "For years our literature has recommended not using cedar chips as bedding, as the volatiles given off from the cedar oil can put your birds off feed and may be toxic in a confined area."
They go on to say: "We will be doing more research so watch our blog for an article on Chickens and Cedar. We want to do a complete and accurate article so it may take us a few weeks to get it posted."
I'll point out that it's now 2019, many, many few weeks after that article and still no update on it....
