Cement floor....smooth or rough?

Quote:
I can see that.. Horses are higher off the ground, and weigh considerably more than chickens.. If I were doing a horse barn, I'd broom the floor.

Although, I like what the concrete tradesman said about a hand trowel finish...that's new to me. I've either seen it slick as glass, or rough as cob.. Makes sense that there's something in the middle.

Thanks everybody for your comments. If I proceed on with a cement pad I will go with a smooth finish. Cynthia, thanks for mentioning bumblefoot to me, being a newbie I really don't know what it is but coming from the voice of experience I will definitely heed the advice! jimmoose thanks for the nice post with all the good details...very useful.

We will pretty well do the pour ourselves. By "we" I'm talking of my SIL and myself. He's a big ol' 3rd generation construction worker with his grandfather owning a large construction company several years back down in Florida...so with his grandfather and father riding herd over him while he worked he *had* to learn things right!

The SIL has been tutoring me along some on whether to go wood or cement. He doesn't do construction anymore but works on rc subs out on oil rigs and has been working off the shore of Brazil lately. He's home now for a month or so and I need to keep him busy so he won't get into trouble (like he did last week getting wrapped up with poison ivy while prancing through the woods.

Anyhow, I'm pondering over things now. At the moment I'm looking at a 12x12 coop with a shed roof. I'm really looking at the open air aspect of things, though we do get some chilly weather down here in south Alabama occasionally. I made design it with some movable sides/windows. We'll see...

Thanks again for the feedback!!!!

I just poured concrete and its TOO rough. I'm worried it will be tough on their feet so we will pour another layer or cover it.
