Sounds like you need to add "Ghostery" to your Mac - it blocks out adds/data collectors and lets you decide which sites you consider safe.....and it is free.

I'm terrified to install anything ...is it made by or from apple? Would purchasing a GFM solve my now, new problem?

At the current levels, GFM's do not have ads.

I have never had the "issues" I just had a little earlier today.
All seems back to normal for me now.
The ads have never bothered me before, but if I have to deal with "that" again... I would actually consider it.

I got it free from their site a few years ago and never had an issue. I have GFM but Ghostery also blocks other data collecting groups - currently mine is blocking 6.

But I totally agree, avoid anything you don't feel comfortable with.
