Dear Friends,

I hope you can help. My chicken was bearing down as if she was constipated while she was having a bowel movement. She seems fine. She is eating well. It was stuck to her so I had to pull it out gently with gloves. After. Removed it she started walking normal again and didn’t have to bear down. It almost looks like worms but I don’t think s? Can someone please help? She has had normal bowl movements. She lays an egg a day. I think she has become broody and I wonder if she has changes in her bowels from sitting on her nest all day. I have a photo of the poop. I hope she isn’t egg bound either. I think she is broody because she is sitting in her neat. I get paranoid as I am not a chicken master. I’m just a beginner.

Thanks!

Yes, it's a tapeworm. I've seen blobs like that when I've dealt with tapeworms. There are flat sections and stringy pieces, and after magnifying the photo there are segments in one section. Typical for a tapeworm.
Follow the instructions that @Eggcessive provided in the above post and buy Equimax equine paste. It'll take care of tapeworms. Redose again in 10 days after the initial dosing.
You only need to dose the broody hen that excreted the tapeworm. :)

That looks possibly like a mass of tapeworms, but I want to tag @dawg53 for his opinion. If it is tapeworms, a wormer with praziquantel is needed. Equimax horse wormer is sold in feed stores, and that has praziquantel. Dosage for tapeworms is 0.03 ml per pound of weight or 0.15 ml for a 5 pound hen. Have you seen any tapeworm segments in the poop of that chicken? Here is what Equimax looks like:

Thank you so much. This poor hen of mine is so healthy. I have never even seen anything wrong with her and now tapeworms. How on earth did she get them? Well I am glad that I have a solution now. Thank you so much. Poor girl…

Here is a video of what tapeworms segments look like in the poop, but they can be all connected together in the gut:
This is excellent information thank you. I will look at her poop as well. I thought her poop liked pretty healthy. However as you mentioned perhaps they are all connected to her gut.

Thank you so much!!!! You are all amazing. Why did my poor Betsy get tapeworm!? Well at least I have a solution now!! I am very grateful. I’ll be going to my local feed store today. ASAP!

Just by ingesting an infested insect, so don't worry, there is nothing you could have done to prevent it.
Thank you! I cannot wait to get that medication in her asap! Lol do I have to worry about contagion ? Chicken to human and or chicken to dogs or cats. All my dogs and cats are vaccinated and get their routine wormer injections, pills etc.
