Chantecler Thread!

Pics
Oh, I ADORE cubalayas! I've heard that the males can be really aggressive though. Aggression toward others roosters is tolerated here. I keep them separated from one another. Aggression toward the girls will never be tolerated (unless it amorous aggression). Aggression toward the
feeder/handler/caretaker/ME won't be tolerated either. That's probably the only thing that has kept me from getting them.

Do the girls brood? That would be the whole reason to get yet ANOTHER breed! Well, that and good meat birds. How are they? I'm assuming if you raise them that you've eaten more than a couple? Are they a good solid bird like the chantecler appears to be?

Thanks for your responses.
Cubalayas are NOT aggressive to their ladies or to humans generally speaking.
even young pullets go broody.
If you care to learn more, we have a nice thread going on this website with lots more info and pics.

The voice of experience there Lacy..
- I don't know about Cubalaya rooster behavior because we are a "girls only" farm. Well, one cat and me excluded. If we weren't I'd sure give serious thought to a Cubalaya rooster. Those are some beautiful birds.
- One of my girls is talkative but I think it is mostly - "Hey, got any treats?". The Faverolles talk just to hear themselves talk.
- She also went broody for a couple of days and for no reason since the eggs aren't fertile. About the only thing that DOESN'T seem instinctive to chickens - knowing that there is no reason to sit on the eggs.

Can you give me the link to that please?

We've not (and won't be) eating any of the girls even after they stop laying but they ARE small birds. The PCs are definitely larger and more solid looking. If you want a sleek race car, you don't expect it to be a big solid boxy thing, right? I was thinking about the chantecler that someone showed on a plate. It looked nice and meaty even though it is a sleek bird. Did I mention that they fly?

Fly? Into trees? Well, I don't have any of those around here so they'd probably be on top of the house or barn, right? Then, I could just see what they left on top of the house and my husband would be oh-so-thrilled about that!

Bruce Thanks Bruce, for the link. I'll go lurk over there for a little while.

Hi there- I have two beautiful white chanticler hens and I would love to add more of them to our flock. I may have missed it somewhere, but is there anyone or anywhere that sells hatching eggs or chicks?
Our girls Gretchen and Taylor

Where are you located?

I am located in between Madison and Milwaukee and will have hatching eggs and chicks of the White Chantecler. I am doing pedigree breeding with a heavy culling program, and so my eggs are probably pretty pricey compared to some others around. I also raise my birds on certified organic feed, which is incredibly expensive. I have been doing some discounting if you are pretty local, to keep some of the genetics close by "just in case".

Interesting that you had a very broody hen. Mine have actually never gone broody before. Since I'm very interested in the traits associated with different lines, would you mind letting me know where you got yours from initially?

Quote: Hi there- thank you for responding. I am located between Appleton and Green Bay. My hens originally come from a lady north of Green Bay. She breeds chanticlers. I recently connected with her again and I am able to get some hatching eggs from her. Yes- she was broody on and off all summer, and was actually the only one of my birds that sat on eggs regularly. I took her off a clutch of eggs nearly every day

Ah yes, Much closer.

Good to know that there more of them in the state now. I think I *used* to be the only one. My Partridge birds are very broody, so I guess I'm glad that so far my Whites are not.

Thanks for the info!
