Chantecler Thread!

Sorry, what I meant was relating to the weights given in the standard for cockrels and pullets; how many moths old? Do the standard refer to birds 364 days of age? Can't be, can it? Mary

The standard seems to call for birds that are much lighter in weight than mine. I suppose they may well be over sized and I ate the biggest of the lot. he was enormous. I might shoulda' kept him around just for kicks but I had more cockerels than I needed/wanted. I'm still convinced that I killed the best birds I had but I had to make decisions and kept what seemed nearer the SOP in relation to type.

My birds are close the SOP weight but I have a friend whose hens are huge compared to mine.

From what I hear, most APA judges don't bother with scales or measuring sticks and seem to go with the larger birds...all other things being equal....or not.

I think most of them just seem to like bigger birds, according to an APA judge who visits BYC fairly often.

I actually prefer the bigger birds. Other than my silkies!

Our Walter is weighing over 8 lbs now and he was born in April this year.

Chanteclers have reached the heights of being my favorite chicken and may well become my exclusive breed but I will now unsubscribe from this miserably underused thread. Good luck to all.

I recently had some Chantecler losses. Only young birds to a respiratory illness. Then last week another 4, this time silkies. I have now seperated my young silkies away from the rest of the flock. This seems to happen when its cold out. This week everyone seems to be good or getting better. Out of all my young Chanteclers, 25 chicks hatched in June I only have 2 cockerels. Very strange.

it may be beneficial to have a local school do a post mortem to determine what is taking the lives of the birds. Some respiratory illnesses can be treated, others not and will infect any new birds you bring to the flock. In some diseases, the survivors have resistance, but will pass the germs to the new ones.
