charcoal or wood ash

Does anyone know about adding charcoal or wood ash in the coop to detoxify the chickens? I have found several sites on this but was curious if anyone does this..we have a coal burning stove and we burn wood in our fireplace. Which one would be ok for my girls? Thanks in advance!

They like to dust bathe in wood ash i don't know about them eating it. And i wouldn't think any coal would be good for them.

I use wood ash and dm for a dust bath. I agree coal ash wouldn’t be good.

I use wood ash in the dust bath, but I have seen them eat big bits out of it.. and dark poop then too LOL

If there's ash and coal anywhere on my yard, my chickens will find it. I will find them dust bathing and eating it. Black dirty chickens and black poop, every time.
Last winter, I mixed wood ash, peat moss and sand. Very dusty stuff but they loved it.

Curious that anyone burns coal for heat anymore......is that common in your area?

I meant to say charcoal, I burn wood personally. I remember carrying 100lb sacks of coal when in the UK. Dirty stuff!

Normal wood stove. The coal that I burnt when in the UK, was in a brick fireplace
