Chased by a dog

Oh my... Went to the vet again today. She said I may have out feed in her trachea as she makes a small ticking noise while breathing. But she said to keep her in antibiotics until Tuesday and we'll make the final decision. BUT tonight Chica freaked out and I had to pull out the tube while I wasn't done feeding her. There was food in the tube when it came out and Chica threw her head backward and gulped for air. I immediately put a bit of the towel I had in hand in her beak to get any food out then she was trying to swallow... She is still alive two hours later. I am totally freaking out. I am exhausted physically and mentally. Supposed to give her the antibiotic in 2 hours. Pour thing... She is on all meds and I thought she was doing better. Now is that torture and should I stop. What if she had a tiny bit of baby food in her lungs? Could she still make it? Thank you... I am so upset at myself...

You are doing a great job! You are exhausted and so are doubting yourself. Chica would not have survived this long without you, every day has been a small victory. We all do the best we can, I'm hoping she turns the corner soon - for both of you..

Dear all! An update in Chica: she is still alive, way more alert but still does not eat in her own. The swelling disappeared and looks more reddish today. I stopped the anti inflammatory bit give her 1/8 of baby aspirin a day. Tube feed her 3x a day and we keep the antibiotics. Now I'd be tempted to deworming her even if the vet says that would be the symptoms... Any other idea?

Thank you for your support! Chica is way more alert and stands in her one leg! Makes noise when she sees my cats but not eating... My question is : would deworming her makes her even weaker? Can't afford that. What else could she have??? She is not as puffed up as she used to be be still sleeps a lot tucking her beak under her wing... I never really paid a close attention to that behavior and I am asking you if this is a sign of a relaxed mood or not??? Mahalo!

Glad for the upswing in her health! Every little is progress..many birds sleep with their heads tucked under their wing. I think it's the bird equivalent of pulling the covers over your head! Personally, I would not worm her. If she has not had the problem before, it's highly unlikely to be that now. Deworming probably would weaken her in this fragile state - sometimes it's better to do nothing....
Are you still tube feeding? Have you tried her with very small amounts of high protein treats? I would be putting vitamins in her water every other day or so.
Gross subject, but how is her poop? If it's runny and loose, you could try some apple cider vinegar (ACV) with its' mother (untreated, raw) to help her gut get back to normal. 1 tablespoon/gallon of water. Many people swear that garlic in the water helps the gut also - 1 crushed clove/gall. water.
Keep us posted, Sue

I agree, wouldn't worm her & about the ACV (Apple Cider Vinegar, unfiltered) I love it, you may want to try wetting her feed with the ACV water. I'm a strong believer in FF (fermented feeding) there's a long, long thread on this site. It's simple and I've found the benefits worth the try. Have you tried yogurt? MealWorms?

Yes mealworms and no interest from Chica. She seemed to enjoy yogurt and I shared that with my vet who pointed out Chickens are no mammals and never get breastfeed and don't have the proper enzyme to digest milk or yogurt... Makes sense so instead I bought some digestive enzymes which basically are the proper good yeast that helps us and them digest. I am giving her electrolytes vitamins and everything else that shouldn't be a problem: tomatoes papaya grapes... But no interest from Chica... Added extra human vitamins (no possible overdose are they would get flushed down)... As I said Chica is well alert but still does not feed it drink on her own. Today I increased the meals to 18 ml 3x a day. Chica is that my 1 lb 3 ounces ...
