Chat N Chicknfun Thread

mostly eggs...

a few are pets for my kids, and I eat the extras, but I have never done a big "just for meat" order

what about you?

I actually find it difficult to order breeds purely for production, I like all of the different colors and personalities, that sometimes it is difficult to be practical.
We have actually considered a cornish cross order, as we eat lots of chicken, but is so hot here now that I am afraid they would die of the heat b4 maturing enough to process.....they don't take heat well, I hear

just remember to keep calling the roos 'dinner' and 'lunch' or something along those lines. It helps quite a bit.

If you know anyone who has butchered before, it is great to have help the first few times.

I actually found a neighborhood boy who hunts squirrel all year round, and he is very happy to come over and dress out any of my chickens for just a plate of cookies. He does a great job, I just show him which one I want done, then go in the house. Way less than an hour later, he hands me one perfectly dressed out chicken, and one trash bag with the offal.

I do let him skin the chickens though, super faster than plucking.

My dad, when he hunted deer, would get the cousins to come over and do most of the work for him, in exchange for a bit of the meat.

I have 4 kids
boy 27
girl 25
girl 15
girl 13 Our baby- she is Autistic

How many do you have?

I have 5 boys,

14, 11, 9, 7, 4

So perpetual mess and destruction are the order of the day.

Since it is cold, I would love to sit and chat......

But I have to make sure the boys found the last two summer tires (hidden in the snow banks...we have been searching for weeks now) and load them up and then run into town to get the tires changed.

Makes great sense!! My DH 's step dad was a butcher, so he knows how to do all of that sort of thing- LOL- The food names- Yeah, I would have to put them in an ugly looking pen and have someone else feed and water them

DH is really good about that kind of thing, so he would do it! I think I would prefer it skinned, as I don't like fat or skin of any kind- so that would work for me!!!

Hey ya'll! Seems I check in when nobody's home???
Hey and welcome AK. DH and I headed your way in August for a couple of weeks. Celebrating our 10th anniversary, 2 years late!!

Would love to get a chance to see locals and their chickens and go to farmer's market. Heard/seen that your produce is huge due to extra daylight.
Goodness, 4 boys, lucky you. Great you are here with us too!
